Custom Saddle Fitting

At Double J Saddlery, we understand the importance of a proper saddle fit for both horse and rider. To help us assess your horse’s conformation and recommend the best saddle fit, please follow these guidelines when submitting photos:

Photo Submission Instructions:

  1. Positioning: Have a helper stand your horse squarely on level ground—cement is ideal.

  2. Head Position: Make sure your horse’s head is in a natural position—neither raised nor lowered.

  3. Shoulder Shots: Take clear, side-view photos of your horse’s shoulders from a 90-degree angle. Capture both the left and right sides.

  4. Rear View: Take a few photos from behind your horse. You may need to stand on a step stool or bucket for a clear angle. Focus on the wither area; the hindquarters are not needed.

  5. Visibility: Clip or pin the mane up so both shoulders are clearly visible.

  6. Additional Photos: Pictures of your horse with its current saddle, both with and without a rider, can also be helpful. Please include the saddle brand and fit information. If it's a Double J saddle, include the serial number (located in the gullet).

In-Person Custom Fitting – $200

For the most accurate fit, we offer in-person custom saddle fitting at our shop in Yoakum, TX. For a $200 fee, we’ll evaluate your horse using our variety of fitting trees. This hands-on approach allows us to test tree shapes directly on your horse and find the best match.

Bonus: The $200 fitting fee is fully credited toward your purchase of a Double J Saddle.

Pad & Cinch Recommendations

Proper padding and cinching are also essential for optimal saddle fit:

  • Use minimal padding—too much can negatively affect fit.

  • We recommend mohair girths and nylon tie straps for comfort and performance.
